Very lazy hit bait title. After reading the article I think this is honestly your best take yet. |

I mean it's the leafs, but also I want to focus on this quote:
"Paying $5 Million for a starter is low as it is"
13 goaltenders make more than $5 million per.
Price
Bobrovsky
Vasilevsky
Gibson
Murray
Hellebuyck
Binnington
Markstrom
Grubauer
Quick
Shesterkin
Merzlinkins
Kuemper
How many of those guys would you rank in the top half of NHL goaltenders today?
Among goalies with 40+ starts last year, of the top 10 in Save Percentage only half of them will make $5 million or more next season.
$5 million seems to be about the going rate for an average to above-average NHL starter.

Remember a few weeks before the playoffs when you said you would take Matthews over McDavid. That was a pretty solid take.
Also, Duncan Keith and Kris Russell are not key losses. Keith retiring was the best case scenario and was replaced by Kulak for half the cap hit. Russell was an expensive spectator in the press box. They were happy to see that contract expire and showed zero interest in bringing him back. Now they have Slater Koekkoek earmarked for the pressbox at $925,000, or it opens the door for guys like Niemelainen or Samorukov to win a job as a 7th man.
Calvin Pickard is not a key addition. He's just a veteran presence in the AHL making the league minimum. If Campbell or Skinner get hurt, then they can recall Pickard rather than a 22-year old kid.
Otherwise, good blog.

I thought that was overall a good effort by Ek but did notice that quote as well. The defending Cup champs are paying their starter 3.4 million and no one seems particularly concerned about it although, objectively, it's their biggest question mark going into next season. But 5 million is most definitely not as 'low as it is.' |

Cmon, who is the bigger loser McDavid or Matthews? Either of them are not capable of carrying their team on their shoulders. |

Clearly Toronto by light years and it's not close at all. The Leafs are the number one contender for the Cup and Edmonton will miss the playoffs. |
